Take a trip into your past and try to remember the days when you were a toddler. Can you recall sitting in front of the TV watching Batman fight Evil Doers and asking yourself how he could walk in those tight spandex pants of his? Or if you were even younger, can you remember being plonked in a bouncing baby chair and feeling nauseous as your nanny/mom, so engrossed in the TV plot, would violently bounce you to sleep so that you would pass out quickly and not annoy them? No? Well if you don't it's alright because AUSTIN POWERS: INTERNATIONAL MAN OF MYSTERY will take you on a psychedelic walk down memory lane.
AUSTIN POWERS fuses Sixties fashion and groovy music with corny plots. Austin Powers (Mike Myers) was a fashion photographer and a world class swinger as well as a successful spy.(Aren't they all?) Yet at the height of his career, he was cryogenically frozen in 1967. Now, thirty years later, he is defrosted to defeat his evil nemesis, Dr. Evil, who once again plots to hold the world ransom by sending a nuclear probe to the centre of the earth if his ransom is not met. Thus Austin Powers must outwit Dr. Evil by using his spy skills and sixties ideology.
Typical of all spy movies there is a love interest, and who can be more more stunning than Special Agent Vanessa Kensington (played by the beautiful Elizabeth Hurley)? Austin Powers not only has to defeat Dr. Evil and save the world, he has to learn how to put aside his own out dated ideas of sexuality and win the love of Agent Kensington.
What makes AUSTIN POWERS such a great movie are the many surprising stars making their cameo appearances. So look out for them, the pace of the show adds a sixties feel to it. The funny parts are when Austin Powers and his band appear between bits of the movie, resembling shows in the sixties when out of the blue someone or something appears in between an exciting part of the show, but hey I wasn't born in the sixties so correct me if I'm wrong. The brilliant thing about AUSTIN POWERS is that anyone of any age with a sense of humour will enjoy the show. The chemistry between Elizabeth Hurley and Mike Myers is believable and this show just might be the one to put Elizabeth in the limelight and not just be recognised as Hugh's main squeeze.
So don't just take my word for it, go and catch the movie soon. The only thing that worries me is that Mike Myers just might start another fad to speak like him. Remember WAYNE'S WORLD? You have been warned. * Wait for the TV2 broadcast.
** A little creaky, but still better than staying at home with Gotcha!
