MAST SEA
WHITE SQUALL is a movie that will appeal to each and everyone of us. As the movie unravels, it gives a sense of nostalgia bringing us back to the autumn of 1960. Thirteen young men were selected to become students of an elite floating prep school---- the Ocean Academy. They were to pursue a rigorous course of studies whilst learning to work as the crew of the "Albatross" a square-rigged brigantine.
As the voyage begins, the boys learn to grow up quickly as they experience the wonders of the caribbean and South Pacific. All appears well, as the "Albatross" is reaching the end of her voyage when she was struck by a freak weather condition---- a white squall.
The drama heightens as the ship capsizes taking the lives of four students and two staff members as she brings them to their watery graves. The survivers were rescued after two days at sea and what follows is a courtroom drama to determine the fate of the difficult Christopher Sheldon (JEFF BRIDGES), who was skipper of the ship. Thus the question remains: Had Sheldon through neglect and inferior seamanship resulted in taking the lives of the six? Or had he provided the lessons that saved the others?
The crew, deeply divided in their opinions, must learn to take responsibility instead of leaving the decision at the mercy of the authorities. Only they can decide through their own experiences which stand they must take.
The answers that they derive will show that they have gone through the rites of passage from boys to men. WHITE SQUALL is definitely a "mast sea" (must see heh heh)
